CR2 file type is used by some popular Canon digital cameras, such as EOS300d, EOS350d,
EOS400d and Digital Rebel XT. Earlier Canon cameras used the .CRW file format, which
is based on the Camera Image File Format (CIFF).
CR2 is a RAW format that replaced CRW format. RAW format means that the data is
written to memory directly from the CCD or CMOS chip, without any modification,
processing or compression. So CR2 is a short name for Canon RAW version 2 file format.
This files usually contains much information's for the picture that are lost when
picture is saved in JPEG or other image file formats. Because CR2 file format contains
vast quantities of information, the size of the CR2 file will be about four times larger
than equivalent highest quality JPEG file format.
These extra information's that are contained in CR2, make this Canon Raw images
popular and favored in astrophotography because in post processing can be bought
very fine details of planets, nebulae and galaxies. Also CR2 (or RAW files generally)
offer great flexibility if you are dealing with exposure times. To under exposed
images can easily be increased in brightness - contrast without introducing noise
or effecting the dynamic range, as can a over exposed image.
